Endodontic treatment is commonly known as “root canal”. “Endo” is the Greek word for “inside” and “odont” is Greek for “tooth”. Endodontic treatment treats the inside of the tooth. In broad terms, a root canal is a type of filling that is placed within your tooth’s delicate root canal systems. The soft tissue that exists inside of each tooth can become infected or inflamed. Properly performed root canal therapy removes the diseased soft tissue from within the tooth and roots without compromising the structural integrity or the functional ability of the tooth.
After the diseased pulp is removed the empty canal is cleaned, filled and sealed. Following the procedure, the patient returns to the general dentist for final restoration. The tooth continues to function like any other tooth. Root canal therapy can save a tooth which otherwise would need to be removed. Root canals save nearly 16 million teeth annually.
