After Completion of Endodontic Treatment
Endodontic treatment has now been completed. The root canal system has been permanently sealed. However, the outer surface (chewing surface) is sealed with a temporary restoration. This temporary filling may recede over time as you eat, drink, brush, and is designed to last for approximately two weeks. If you feel the filling has come out completely , prior to your appointment with your general dentist, we will be happy to check it for you at no charge and replace it. Your tooth is more prone to fracture immediately after endodontic treatment. You should chew on the other side until your general dentist has placed a permanent restoration or a crown. Delaying your appointment with your general dentist could potentially lead to failure of your endodontic treatment. Please phone your general dentist immediately for an appointment upon completion of your endodontic therapy with us. We will email a full report regarding your care and any further findings and recommendations.
Discomfort may be alleviated by taking ibuprofen (Advil), aspirin, or acetaminophen (Tylenol) as directed. If you were prescribed a prescription strength pain medication please follow the directions on the bottle. Note that most prescription strength pain relievers do not allow you to drive when taking and may require additional protocols when taking. Consult your pharmacist and bottle for any other instructions or restrictions while taking.
Post-operative infections occasionally occur. This usually requires just an office visit and examination. Many times placing you on an antibiotic for one week will take care of the infection. Occasionally, other follow-up procedures will be needed if your case deems so.
